In a statement today, Jill Savitt, Executive Director of New York-based human rights group Dream for Darfur, once again called on China to use its considerable influence to urge the Sudanese regime to stop its genocidal campaign against the people of Darfur.  The statement came on the heels of Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Taha's visit to Beijing this week, including meetings with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Vice President Xi Jinping.

On World Refugee Day, June 20th, Dream for Darfur and the Save Darfur Coalition will hold demonstrations at the corporate headquarters and retail outlets of those sponsors of the Beijing games that have failed to address the Darfur genocide -- despite their responsibility as stakeholders of the Olympics. Those four companies are: General Electric, Coca-Cola, Swatch, and Volkswagen. Activists from New York to California will protest the silent complicity of these sponsors -- urging that they speak out to help end the genocide.

Talk Radio News Service: Actress Mia Farrow gave remarks on Darfur to the press during a conference call today.  Farrow highlighted the now five-year-long genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan, as well as the United Nations Security Council’s upcoming trip to Sudan.  Farrow also discussed how the upcoming Olympic games in China can be used to raise awareness of the role the Chinese government plays in Darfur.

Reuters: "In a letter to U.S. President George W. Bush, actress Mia Farrow, head of the activist group Dream for Darfur, urged him to get personally involved "to end the genocide ... and make lasting peace in the region a legacy of your administration."

Speaking to reporters in a conference call, Farrow said China was "unwilling or unable" to use its influence to press Khartoum on Darfur and Bush must now take the lead."
