New York -- August 6, 2008: Dream for Darfur will launch its major
Olympics demonstration this Friday – at the moment the Beijing Games
begin. The protest will continue for a week and thousands have pledged
to participate.
“Our goal is to make sure the people of Darfur
are not forgotten while the world celebrates China as the Olympic host,
despite its well-documented complicity in the Darfur genocide,” said
Jill Savitt, Director of Dream for Darfur. “We always knew it would be
tough to get into Beijing to stand up for the people Darfur, so we
planned the Darfur Olympics – an alternative opening ceremony and
weeklong webcast from Darfurian refugee camps.”

Statement: Joey Cheek and China |
|
Wednesday, 06 August 2008 |
|
Statement of Jill Savitt, Executive Director of Dream for Darfur
“Joey Cheek represents what the Olympics mean to so many people: honor, courage, determination. He has been promoting an idea – an Olympic Truce for Darfur. Joey has suggested that the international community invoke the historic Truce to demand that the Sudanese regime refrain from bombing or attacking its own civilians for a period of 55 days before, during, and after the Games.
The Olympic host could invoke the Truce for the people of Darfur. Instead they have banned Joey Cheek from coming to the Games.
